An address, not an account
The first launch generates a key pair on the device. The public half — an address beginning calix1… — is the account. There is no sign-up form to fill in and no credential to steal.
Messages only the two of you can read
Every chat message is end-to-end encrypted. A group sends one separately encrypted copy per member, so there is no shared key sitting on a server.
Calls, one to one or in a group
Voice and video. One-to-one calls are encrypted end to end between two up-to-date phones that have chatted before; group calls are not.
Added by QR, never by address book
You add someone by scanning the code on their screen. PCall never uploads your phone book and has no directory to look you up in.
A vault that stays on the phone
Notes, images and files encrypted on the device under a key derived from your recovery phrase. They are not uploaded anywhere.
Report, block and delete
Report and Block sit on every chat, message, post and comment, and Profile → Delete Account removes the account from our server for good.
Your account is a key, not a record we keep
When you first open PCall it generates a key pair on your device. The public half — an address that begins calix1… — is what other people add to reach you. There is no sign-up form, no phone number, no email address and no password, so there is nothing to lose in a breach and nothing for us to hand over.
You add someone by scanning the QR code on their screen. It carries their address, their display name and the public key their messages are encrypted to.
What is encrypted, and what is not
- Chat messages are end-to-end encrypted, always. A group chat sends one separately encrypted copy per member rather than a shared key.
- Photos, video, voice messages and files attached to a chat are encrypted on your device before upload; the server relays what it cannot open.
- One-to-one call audio and video are end-to-end encrypted too — through the relay server under a key both devices derive on their own, or directly between devices with each side's fingerprint signed by its identity key so the server cannot substitute its own. The key comes from your chat, so this needs two phones that have exchanged messages before and both run a current version; otherwise the call still connects, without end-to-end encryption.
- Group calls are not end-to-end encrypted. There is no shared key for a group to encrypt under; their audio and video are encrypted in transit to our call server, which can technically read them, and are never recorded.
- Posts, comments and likes in the Social tab are not encrypted. They are stored on our server in the clear and shown to your mutual contacts. Photos you post there are re-compressed on our server, which also removes their metadata — including any location the camera recorded.
The recovery phrase is the only way back
Twelve words, shown once, saved by you from Settings → Backup. They restore your identity on a new device. We never see them, they are never sent anywhere, and we cannot reset them — if you lose them, the account is gone. That is the cost of an account nobody else can open.
Where it runs
iPhone, and Android phones. The app is free, carries no advertising and has nothing to buy inside it.
